A dry, water-soluble biocidal composition possesses a broad-spectrum viricidal activity and is produced by mixing together an alkali metal phosphate, a surface- active agent, a strong oxidizing agent, such as sodium persulphate, sulphamic acid, a non-reducing organic acid, such as malic acid or succinic acid, and less than 5 per cent by weight of an inorganic halide such as sodium chloride.
