PURPOSE:To obtain a ferroelectric liq. crystal compsn. capable of forming a ferroelectric phase which is electrodynamically stable around room temp., by blending at least two of an azomethine liq. crystal, an azoxy liq. crystal, and an ester liq. crystal. CONSTITUTION:At least two of an azomethine liq. crystal of formula I or II (a) (wherein A is H, halogen, -C=N or a 1-5C hydrocarbon residue; B is halogen or a 1-5C hydrocarbon residue; n is 1-20; and m is 1-15), an azoxy liq. crystal of formula III or IV (b) (wherein n is 1-15) and an ester liq. crystal of formula V (c) (wherein X is CnH2n+1O- or a group of formula VI or VII; n is 1-20; Y is CmH2m+1, CmH2m+1O- or a group of formula VIII or IX; and m is 1-20) are blended with each other. When three of them, i.e. (a), (b) and (c) are blended with each other, selection is made so as to adjust the difference in the molecular chain length in the longitudinal direction between one and another of the liq. crystals to 10nm or less. Further, the blending is made so as to adjust the content of the least liq. crystal component in the blend to 20mol% or more.
