PURPOSE:To prevent picture quality in the peripheral part of a picture display area from being reduced and to improve sharply the reliability of a device by forming black masks only in a picture display area and 0-10 picture element electrode areas on the outside. CONSTITUTION:Signal potential selected by an element 5 is impressed to a picture element electrode 4, a potential difference between the impressed potential and the potential of an opposite common electrode 3 is impressed to liquid crystal 7 and the driving state of the liquid crystal 7 is changed in accordance with the potential difference to display a picture. The black masks 1 are light shielding layers formed by metal films (nickel-phosphorus, etc.) to interrupt transmitted light in an area other than the picture element electrode 4 and are formed in order to improve the contrast of the image. Since the black masks are metal films and conductors, the masks 1 act dominantly as opposite electrodes. Thereby, the picture quality can be prevented from being dropped by forming the black masks 1 practically dominating the potential of the opposite electrodes only in the picture display area. |
