The invention relates to a method of monitoring the use of a document and a document for implementing it. The subject of the invention is a method of monitoring the use of a document reserved strictly for the owner or for the authorised holder, consisting, after putting the document into service, in incorporating in a predetermined area of the document a randomly coded and predetermined transcription of a set of letters and/or figures constituting a secret "word" known only to the owner, characterised in that the said coded transcription is constituted by a combination 1 of a number greater than two of figures, letters or signs chosen from any character set and in that the said transcription is accompanied by at least one other coded transcription 2 to 7, also based on a similar combination of at least two of the said figures, letters or signs from the said set, of another information item.
