摘要 Liquid crystal phases have two components A and B, composed in turn of one or more single compounds. Component A has a marked negative dielectric anisotropy and imparts to the liquid crystal phase a dielectric anisotropy </= -0.3. Component B has marked nematicity and viscosity not exceeding 30 mPa.s at 20 DEG C. If necessary, a component C with a high clarification temperature of at least 150 DEG C is added to induce in the liquid crystal phase a clarification temperature of at least 60 DEG . An additional component D has very weak positive dielectric anisotropy and an optical anisotropy of at least 0.2. In order to obtain especially short switching times, the components A can also be totally or partially replaced by appropriate single compounds of component D having a marked negative dielectric anisotropy. These liquid crystal phases are suitable for electro-optical display elements based on the ECB effect.
