In order to limit or interrupt the current supplied to a drive device having at least one electric motor on reaching or exceeding an upper limiting current value, a variable which represents the actual value of the current is compared with a variable which represents the upper limiting current value. As soon as the magnitude of the actual value reaches or exceeds the magnitude of the limiting value, a switching process is initiated which influences the current. The magnitude of the limiting value is continuously determined on the basis of the magnitude of the actual value plus a magnitude to maintain a separation from the actual value magnitude, the permissible change and/or the rate of change of the limiting value magnitude determined in this way being kept smaller, at least in one direction, than the corresponding change and/or rate of change of the actual value magnitude. <IMAGE>
