<p>A high definition television system compatible with existing standards. The imaging device (28) has a scan circuit (22) which causes subsampling by jump scanning a plurality of different scanning position variations of the standard imaging device. The scanning position variations are in a triangular configuration. The scan positions are offset and require three frames to build the high definition image. The receiver can use a memory (192) and motion comparator (213) to switch between high spatial low temporal resolution for stationary objects and low spatial high temporal resolution for moving objects. Besides the standard horizontal (60) and vertical (62) sweep generators the scan circuit (22) includes generators (64, 66, 68, 76, 78) whose output is added (70, 72, 74, 80, 82) to the standard sweep output to cause the scan to jump between scan positions causing the triangular subsampling pattern.</p> |
