<p>A machine for use in making a battery comprises a stack station (10), a transfer stage (11), a strap and terminal casting machine (12), a boxing station (13) and a return transfer stage (14). Cassettes (15) incorporating the accumulator plates (19) and acid bearing medium (20) are made up at station (10) and loaded into the casting machine (12) on two supports (24, 26). Intermediate these supports are locating means (27) which place inserts into the mould (30) to allow appropriate terminals to be cast onto the plates (19). The locating means (27) includes pneumatically operated collets. The arrangement allows the plates and medium to be held together throughout the manufacturing operation. It also reduces the labour involved in the use of inserts.</p> |
