PURPOSE:To prevent a seal member disposed between the outer periphery of a catalyst carrier and the inner surface of a casing, from thermally degrading due to affection by exhaust gas, by arranging a flexible carbon seal member having a low friction coefficient on the upstream side end face of the seal member. CONSTITUTION:Reduction and oxidation monolith catalyst carriers 2, 3 are disposed in a cylindrical catalyst casing 1. Further, ring-like steel nets 14 are disposed between the center parts of the catalyst carriers 2, 3 and the inner surface of the casing 1. Thermally expandable seal members 15 are disposed between the outer peripheral surfaces of the catalyst carriers 2, 3 and the inner surface of the casing 1 at the front and rear end faces of the nets 14. In this arrangement, the entire periphery of each seal member 15 is covered with a flexible carbon seal member 16 having a small friction coefficient. With this arrangement, the seal members 15 are prevented from making into direct contact with exhaust gas, thereby it is possible to prevent degradation of the seal members 15 and blow-off of exhaust gas. |
