In a centrifuge, the kinetic energy contained in the separated fluid is recovered to a great extent by removing the fluid from the circulating layer of fluid by means of one or more skimming tubes (19) and is conducted directly or after intermediate storage in a high-level tank (23) to drive elements of a fluid flow engine (27). The drive elements can be used to drive, for example, the centrifuge itself or an electric generator. The depth of immersion of the skimming tubes into the fluid layer can be adjusted. <IMAGE>
