The invention provides a double- cell battery (10) which comprises a pair of electrochemical cells connected in series. The battery has a casing (12) divided by a fluid-tight partition (14) into two chambers (16, 18). Each chamber is divided into two compartments by a ceramic tube solid electrolyte separator (20, 22). One of the cells has active anode and cathode materials (36, 32) which are contained respectively in one of the tubes (20) and outside the tube (20) in the associated chamber (16); and the other cell has active anode and cathode materials (38, 34) which are contained respectively outside the other tube (22) in the other chamber (18) and inside said other tube (22). The cell chambers (16, 18) are electronically connected to each other. An advantage of the invention is that it provides a battery 10 comprising two cells arranged in series and requires only two purpose-built current collectors.
