When charging accumulators (1) with a constant charging current intensity, the problem arises that, if it is only slightly discharged, the accumulator (1) can be overcharged such that its life is reduced, or, after a previously heavy discharge, is fully charged again much too late, since the charging current is too small. The charging current is therefore regulated as a function of the charge or discharge state. Control logic (8) is used for this purpose, having an adjusting element (9) for adjusting the charging current intensity. The control logic (8) is at the same time connected to a current sensor (10) for detecting the charging current.
