The system e.g. for tape noise reduction, includes a combining network which has two input terminals, and a side chain whose output terminal is connected to the second input terminal of the first combining network. An inverter has an input terminal connected to an output terminal of the first combining network. A switching device selectively supplies either an encode input signal or an output signal of the inverter to an input terminal of the side chain. The encode input signal is supplied to the first input terminal of the combining network and is supplied to the input terminal of the side chain through the switching device and an encode output signal is obtained from an output terminal of the inverter.
