A roll for hot forming rod products has a hard wear resistant peripheral surface, for engaging and forming rod products and an innermost mandrel engaging surface made of cemented carbide material with nickel comprising at least 10 vol.% of the binder material. The roll is used for hot forming steel rod in multistand rolling mills, esp. in a finished rod dia. range of 7/32 to 1/2 in. Addn. of nickel to the binder material of the innermost surface (inner ring) dramatically increases the tensile strength to improve resistance to thermal cracking and stress-related failures. |
