The appts. includes a receptacle for volatile solvent, a prim. condenser supported by the receptacle above the solvent to condense vapour and define the top of a vapour zone, and a freeboard chiller second condenser above the first and below the receptacle upper edge to trap any vapour passing the first condenser. The second condenser is on one side only of the receptacle and generates a cold air barrier which extends over the top of the vapour zone. A condensate collection trough is located below the elevation of the first condenser to collect condensate and prevent condensed moisture from mixing with the solvent.
