1437938 Weftless tapes T J KARASS 15 Jan 1975 1659/75 Heading D1R A weftless tape comprises parallel yarns bonded by a mixture of a copolymer of vinyl acetate and ethylene, a copolymer of vinyl acetate and dibutyl maleate and a plasticiser. The yarns may be of nylon, poylester or glass in the form of mono or multi-filament yarns having a total denier of 200 to 60000 and 0 to 14 twists per inch. The yarns need not have a uniform cross-sectional area throughout their length. The first copolymer is obtained by emulsion polymerising 80 to 90% vinyl acetate and 10 to 20% ethylene at 400 to 600 p.s.i. The second copolymer is obtained by atmospheric pressure emulsion polymerisation of 60 to 80% vinyl acetate and 40 to 20% dibutyl maleate. 4 to 2 parts of the first copolymer is mixed with 1 part of the second copolymer and sufficient dibutyl phthalate or di-ethylene glycol di-benzolate plasticiser added to comprise 1 to 5% of the adhesive In a continuous process the yarns are brought into parallel contiguous relationship to form a single ply tape whilst passing under tension through a hot melt of the adhesive. The tape is compacted to uniform width by rolling and heated to cure the adhesive whilst still under tension. The adhesive comprises 15 to 50% by weight of the tape (yarns plus adhesive).
