PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of welding work by removing the circumference of a waveguide substrate corresponding to the coupling part of a waveguide and optical fiber to form a removed part and welding and joining the optical waveguide and the optical fiber in this part. CONSTITUTION:The removed part 4 is formed to the waveguide substrate 3' consisting of Si, etc., by etching and removing the part corresponding to the coupling part 6 of the optical waveguide 2 and the optical fiber 1 by about 100-200mum per side. The optical waveguide 2 consisting of quartz glass, etc., is formed on the waveguide substrate 3' in such a manner that one end thereof projects to nearly the center of the removed part 4 and further, a block 5 for positioning the fiber is provided to the end on the extension line of the waveguide 2 of the substrate 3'. The optical fiber 1 introduced from the outside is fitted into such block 5. The coupling part 6 of the terminal of the fiber 1 and the waveguide 2 can be thermally welded in the removed part; i.e., the space, under the conditions of nearly the equal heat capacity with the waveguide 2 and the fiber 1; therefore, the axial coupling force of the fiber 1 is intensified. |
