The invention relates to an instrument to help perform surgical operations to correct refraction in the cornea by (1) determining the topography of the anterior surface of the cornea, the determination being represented in the form of digital data entered into the memory of a computer; (2) determining the local thickness of the cornea along multiple axes, the determination also being represented in the form of digital data entered into the memory of the computer; and (3) providing a computer- aided visual display of both kinds of data, correlated as appropriate for the selective presentation by the surgeon of one region, aspect or section of the cornea, as the surgeon may think fit for a forthcoming operation.
