A pulse code modulated [PCM] audio signal reproducing apparatus is disclosed, in which, when a video signal or a pulse code modulated audio signal is reproduced from a recording medium, the existence of the pulse code modulated audio signal recorded on the recording medium is judged or analysed by an identifying pilot signal recorded together with the pulse code modulated audio signal, whereas when the video signal is reproduced, the aforementioned judgement is invalidated. Thus, even if the identifying pilot signal and the video signal are superposed upon each other on a frequency axis, and an erroneous judgement [of the presence of a recorded PCM audio signal] is obtained, it is possible to protect the reproducing operation against a problem.
