The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a ligno-cellulosic material based on wood fibres, in the form of a solid piece of wood or of an object made from compressed and/or agglomerated wood fibres, of the non-woven type, moulded into a cake or condensed by compression. This method is characterised in that the material is instantaneously subjected to a temperature lying between approximately 240 and 300 DEG C, for a duration at most equal to 30 minutes per centimetre of thickness, so as to subject it to a controlled pyrolysis leading to cross-linking or chemical bridging (covalent bonds) between the macromolecular chains of the constituents of the material. <IMAGE>
