PURPOSE:To secure a high data reliability independent of the moving direction of a magnetic recording medium by providing a means, which equalizing frequency/phase characteristics of reproduced waveforms independently of the moving direction of the magnetic recording medium, in an equalizing means to perform proper compensation in each of moving directions of the recording medium. CONSTITUTION:A phase compensating circuit 112 has the frequency/phase characteristic switched to a characteristic 203 or 204 in accordance with a signal 114 indicating that the moving direction of a magnetic recording medium 103 is the forward direction of an arrow 117 or the reverse direction. That is, it is switched to the characteristic 203 when the signal 114 indicates the forward direction, and it is switched to the characteristic 203 when the signal 114 indicates the reverse direction. It is preferable that the difference between characteristics 203 and 204 is equalized to that between characteristics 201 and 202. Thus, the overall frequency/phase characteristic from recording data inputted to a recording correction circuit 110 to the output of a phase compensating circuit 112 is equalized independently of the moving direction of the magnetic recording medium, and the waveform distortion due to the moving direction of the magnetic recording medium 103 is equally compensated. |
