The invention relates to a transducer which converts a spark discharge into an acoustic pulse. The transducer can be inserted into boreholes. It is provided with an insulating ceramic barrier which has an opening which has a small cross-section and separates two electrolyte bodies. The two electrolyte bodies come into contact with one another through the opening. By means of an electric arc discharge at the opening, a through-pressure pulse is produced which leads to an acoustic pulse which is introduced into the geological formation via the wall of the drill hole. The specific exponentially extending shape and geometry of the opening channel of the barrier permits the waveform and the frequency spectrum of the acoustic pulses which are produced to be controlled. The transducer has an elastic outer housing and an elastic inner housing with a hydraulic fluid between them. The pressure of the hydraulic fluid can be increased in order to press the outer housing against the drill hole before the spark discharge. The transducer also has a device for degassing. <IMAGE>
