The invention relates to a vehicle wheel with a pneumatic tyre and a rigid rim, which has rim flanges which substantially extend radially inwards. The pneumatic vehicle tyre is fastened by its beads on the radially inner side of the rim next to the rim flanges. Furthermore, the said wheel has at least one one-part covering ring, which fills the space axially inwards of the tyre bead and has a plurality of circumferential hollow chambers. To improve the balance, it is proposed that a hollow chamber facing the neighbouring tyre bead should serve for receiving a counterbalancing weight and that for this purpose the outer wall of the covering ring should have an opening, at least in the region of the counterbalancing weight. A method of balancing the vehicle wheel is distinguished in that, after tyre assembly, first of all the covering ring is fitted, that thereafter any unbalance is determined on a customary testing machine and marked, that then the slit opening is widened, a counterbalancing weight is introduced and is fastened by clamping and/or adhesion and that finally the slit opening is closed.
