Catalyst components for use with aluminium alkyl co-catalysts in the polymerization of ethylene/ alpha -olefin or ethylene/ alpha -olefin/diene copolymers comprise:- (A) a magnesium compound containing at least one Mg-halogen bond; (B)a halogenated compound of Ti or V, wherein the Ti or V is at least partially trivalent, and containing metal-oxygen Ti-OR or V-OR bonds (wherein R is a C1-C20 alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl group); and (B) an electron-donor compound containing one or more oxygen, silicon and/or phosphorus atoms and which is an ether or an organic or inorganic ester; the atomic ratio of magnesium to titanium (or vanadium) being from 0.2:1 to 50:1; the atomic ratio of halogen to titanium (or vanadium) being at least 2:1; the atomic ratio of halogen to magnesium being at least 2:1; and the ratio of groups -OR' to titanium (or vanadium) atoms being not more than 1.5:1.
