In a method for determining the position of stationary reflection centres by pulse-by-pulse illumination with wave energy and reception of the wave energy scattered back from the reflection centres, particularly a method for acoustically surveying the bottom of a stretch of water by means of a side looking sonar, the reception on a moving vehicle is carried out simultaneously via two receiving channels with receiving directions pointing towards the same vehicle side. Both receiving channels are rotated by an angle of rotation with respect to a plane extending at right angles to the direction of travel, one receiving channel being rotated forward and the other receiving channel being rotated astern. The received signals of both receiving channels are continuously digitised and the data present in a polar co-ordinate format are converted into a position-fixed Cartesian co-ordinate system independent of the vehicle, in such a manner that a set of Cartesian addresses is allocated to each pair of polar co-ordinate values and the same date is allocated to each address of a set. The data for each receiving channel are separately stored. Identical memory addresses are checked and then output as position of reflection centres if data stored under identical addresses are in each case at least greater than zero.
