PURPOSE:To perform quick and easy heat treatment of back-up rolls in particular by heating the rolling roll charged into a heat treatment furnace from the upper part thereof to a prescribed temp., then mounting shielding cylinders to the upper and lower shafts respectively of said roll, subjecting only the barrel part to quick cooling and taking out said roll. CONSTITUTION:The back up roll 1 is hung 10 in the axial direction and is charged into the heat treatment, more particularly electric furnace 9 from the upper part, where the roll is uniformly heated at the prescribed austenitization temp. A chain 11 of the shielding cylinder 7 to shield the upper shaft 3 of the hoisted roll 1 is loosened and the cylinder 7 is concentrically mounted onto the upper shaft 3 of the roll 1. The lower shielding cylinder 8 for shielding the lower shaft 4 of the roll 1 prepared on the outside of the furnace 9 is concentrically mounted to said shaft. The barrel part 2 of the roll 1 in this state is inserted into a cooling means 6 and the peripheral face of the barrel part 2 is quickly cooled. The metal structure and hardness of the barrel part 2 as well as the upper shaft 3 and lower shaft 4 required for the roll are thereby obtd. |
