1,4-butanediol and tetrahydrofuran are prepd. by the contact reaction of an oxygenated C4 hydrocarbon selected from maleic anhydride, maleic acid, succinic anhydride, succinic acid, rbutyrolactone and mixtures comprising at least two of these and hydrogen. The reaction is carried out at about 175-275≦̸C and about 750-1500 psi in the presence of less than about 25 wt.% water, based on the weight of hydrocarbon, and a catalyst of formula (I). In (I), M is Ni and/or Pd; M' is Fe, Co, Rh, Os, Ir and/or Pt; M" is Zn and/or Cd; X is a number sufficient to satisty the valency requirements of the other elements present.
