DOCUMENT POCKETING APPARATUS

An apparatus (12) for pocketing documents including a frame (146) mounted for reciprocal movement between a home position and an extended position relative to the apparatus (12). A plurality of vertically-aligned pocket members (36) is mounted on the frame (146) for selectively receiving documents (30) to be pocketed. A transfer station (48), having first (51) and second receiving members (52), receives a document (30) therebetween, with the first receiving member (51) being mounted on the frame (146) for movement therewith. A first transport apparatus (106) is used to move a document (30) in a first direction to said transfer station (48), and a second transport apparatus (108) is used to move a document (30) in a second direction from the transfer station (48) to the plurality of pocket members (36). A transfer apparatus (140, 142) is used to transfer a document (30) at the transfer station (48) from the first transport apparatus (106) to said second transport apparatus (108). The first receiving member (51) is moveable in the first direction when the frame (146) is moved from said home position to the extended position to enable a document (30) which may jam at the transfer station (48) to be removed therefrom.
