The washing machine has a horizontal washing drum and a tub made of synthetic material formed from a body in the shape of a bowl having an opening in its side wall for putting in the washing and a flat watertight cover. The body (11) of the tub (3) consists mainly of a deep uniform circular vessel (19) and a long narrow hollow flat plate (20) stretching out at right angles to the axis of the said circular vessel and extending this vessel in the axial direction as far as the rim (27) of its opening. There is also an inlet (18) for water and the washing powder or liquid, located on the vertical side of this circular vessel (19). <IMAGE>
