PURPOSE:To shorten time required for focusing of a focus detector and reduce power consumption for auxiliary illumination by auxiliarily illuminating all focus detection areas first and auxiliarily illuminating only a selected focus detection area at the time of following focus detection. CONSTITUTION:Three focus detection areas M, R, and L are provided for focus detection, and the illuminating light from an auxiliary illumination light source 4 is projected to an object, and the reflected light from the object is led to a focus detecting module 2 to detect the focus. The light source 4 has three light emitting parts, and all focus detection areas M, R, and L are illuminated with the light from all light emitting parts at the time of first focus detection in a focus detector. When the focus detection area where a principal object exists is selected by a selecting device, the distance measuring operation is performed for only this area and light emitting parts of the light source 4 are so controlled that the light is projected to only this selected focus detection area; and thus, the focusing operation speed is increased and power is economized. |
