FERROELECTRIC LIQUID CRYSTAL PANEL

PURPOSE:To obtain a ferroelectric liquid crystal panel having a strong memory characteristic and good display grade by subjecting substrates to diagonal etching with an ion beam so that a ferroelectric liquid crystal controlled in orientation is provided thereto. CONSTITUTION:The panel is provided with a liquid crystal layer, the plural substrates which are so disposed as to hold the liquid crystal in place therebetween and at least one sheet of which is transparent, and voltage impressing means provided to the substrates to permit voltage impression to the liquid crystal layer. The ion beam is projected from a diagonal direction to the substrates provided with the etching layers by which the orientation of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is controlled. The substrates are formed to the surface structure having the fine projection groups in a certain specified direction by etching the same from the diagonal direction. The liquid crystal molecules are oriented to the structure having the smallest elastic deformation by such surface structure. the ferroelectric liquid crystal panel having the high memory effect is thereby obtd.
