The temperature of the exit gas from the gas washer in the preparation of phthalic anhydride by catalytic oxidation of naphthalene or oxylene with air is increased by a method in which flue gas from the combustion furnace for residues is mixed with the exit gas before the latter emerges into the atmosphere.
