Methylol alkane has the formula (I). R1 is a saturated aliphatic radical having 1-12 carbon atoms. R2 is CH2OH or a saturated aliphatic radical having 1-12 carbons. An aldehyde with the formula is reacted in the gas phase at a temperature of 50-300 deg. C, with formaldehyde in an environment of a catalyst, an oxide of aluminium, silicon, titanium, tangsten or copper, copper or calcium carbonate or a mixture of two or more such oxides and/or carbonate; R3 is hydrogen or a saturated aliphatic radical which has 1-12 carbon atoms, cpds II informed and hydrogenated in the gas or liquid phase at 70-300 deg.C to give the required compound. Pref. R1, R2,R3 are straight or branched carbon chains. The reaction is carried out at 1-5bar and in the first step the reaction is carried out with nitrogen present.
