An EL display panel includes an array of scan electrodes with crossing data electrodes, a pixel being sandwiched between each scan and data electrode. A write pulse (VW) is applied sequentially to the scan electrodes in a field scan, causing luminescence at pixels under activated data electrodes. A refresh pulse (VR) opposite to the write voltage, is applied throughout the panel upon completion of field scan. To reduce 'burning' of pixels, throughout the panel before the refresh pulse a write compensation pulse (Vcw) of opposite polarity to the write voltage is applied, its amplitude being not enough to cause electroluminescence. After the refresh pulse and before the next write, throughout the panel a refresh compensation pulse (Vcr) is applied, also with an amplitude not enough to cause electroluminescence. Preferably, the values of the write compensation pulse and the refresh compensation pulse are related to the factors of an equivalent circuit to the EL panel. <IMAGE> |
