PURPOSE:To enable the discriminating of road surface condition accurately even in a road surface image subjected to changes in color temperature of outdoor light, by preparing a road surface discrimination data corresponding to time and weather conditions. CONSTITUTION:A road surface in the ongoing direction of a vehicle is taken with a TV camera 20. Data from an internal timepiece 25 and a weather input key 26 are inputted into an RAM 23 and a CPU 30 via an internal bus 22. On the other hand, the ROM 29 stores a probability distribution of various surface conditions corresponding to three primary colors of light with time and weather as parameters. Then, the CPU 30 divides a signal from the camera 20 into three primary colors to compute average color while reading out probability of various surface condition corresponding to three primary colors and signals from time and weather to discriminate the road surface condition by comparing the level. This can eliminate influence of variations in the color of a road surface image eaused by color temperature changes of outdoor light thereby enabling accurate discrimination of running surface condition. |
