<p>PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a plasticizer, etc., by oxidizing pseudocumene with molecular oxygen-containing gas, to improve purity and yield in a short time, safely and inexpensively, by carrying out oxidation reaction by two stages by two devices connected in series. CONSTITUTION:A device wherein a front reaction zone consisting of one or more complete blending type reactor is connected to a rear reaction zone consisting of one more plug flow reactors in series is used. First a reaction mixture consisting of a catalyst comprising a cobalt compound, a manganese compound and a bromine compound as main components, acetic acid as a solvent and pseudocumene as a raw material is sent to the front reaction zone, namely the complete blending type reactor and most (70-90% conversion ratio) of pseudocumene is is oxidized with molecular oxygen-containing gas. Then the oxidation reaction is substantially completed in the rear reaction zone, namely the plug flow type reactor to give the aimed compound continuously. the oxidation reaction is carried out in the range of 130-230 deg.C.</p> |
