PURPOSE:To enable the discriminating of condition of a running road surface accurately, by taking an image of a road surface in the ongoing direction of a vehicle and an image affected by the same outdoor light to the road surface part with the same TV camera to eliminate effect of changes in color on the road surface image. CONSTITUTION:First, an image of a road surface in the ongoing direction of a vehicle and an image affected by the same outdoor light to the road surface are taken with a TV camera 20. Then, signals from the camera 20 are separated into three primary colors of light to be stored into an RAM 26 and a CPU 23 computes average color of the image of the road surface and that of the image affected by same outdoor light to the road surface part and correct the average color of the road surface image by that of the image affected by the same outdoor light to the road surface part by computation. Then, the CPU 23 reads the probability of various surface condition corresponding to three primary colors of light and the that corresponding to three primary colors of the road surface image corrected out of an ROM 25 to compare the level thereof thereby enabling the discriminating of condition of the road surface accurately. |
