Atmospheric air is supplied at a pressure of pref. 4 bar via a compressor or turbocharger (1), pref. driven by exhaust gases, through a pipe (2) and valve (4) to a chamber (3), contg. a synthetic zeolite of pref. sodium-aluminium-silicate of the type, Sodalite X, having the formula Na12((AlO2)12(SiO2)12).xH2O (I) and having a pore diameter of 4.1 Angstrom. The pore diameter is such that, during the passage of compressed air through the porous structure, nitrogen is adsorbed whilst oxygen passes through resulting in up to approximately 97 vol.% oxygen content at exit. The oxygen-rich gas then passes through a valve (6) and is supplied to the fuel mixt. chamber or combustion chamber of the engine after further compression in a second compressor (7).
