PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance in high selectivity in a reaction system consisting of a reactor and a reaction solution tank wherein the reaction solution is always circulated between the reactor and the tank, by chlorinating xylene by irradiation with light rays while diluting fed chlorine with xylene and a chlorinated substance thereof. CONSTITUTION:In obtaining the titled substance by chlorinating xylene in a liquid phase under irradiation with light rays, a reaction system consists of a reactor and a reaction solution tank, has a structure where in a reaction solution is always circulated between the reactor and the tank, a ratio of fed chlorine amount and circulated reaction solution per unit time is 1:20-150 (preferably 1:22-140) (weight) and the reaction is carried out in a semi-batch type. The reaction temperature is 0 deg.C- <= the boiling point of xylene or <=the boiling point of a solvent when the solvent is used and a temperature not to precipitate crystal is preferably selected. The titled substance is used as various intermediate raw materials. |
