PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound which is a raw material of surface-active agent in good reaction efficiency and without coloring, by reacting saturated hydrocarbon with sulfur dioxide and oxygen under irradiation of light in the presence of sodium sulfite and a slight amount of water in a reaction system. CONSTITUTION:When a saturated hydrocarbon (e.g. 8-24C normal paraffin, etc.) is reacted with sulfur dioxide and oxygen under irradiation of light in the presence of sodium surfite to provide the aimed alkane sulfonic acid, the reaction is carried out while adding a slight amount of water, i.e. water in an amount corresponding to 0.1-1wt% saturated hydrocarbon newly fed to reaction system. Further, water containing a alkane sulfonate is preferably used in an early stage of reaction initiation as the added water, because the rate of photosulfoxylation is accerelated by adding the sulfonate and increasingly in early addition thereof. |
