The process is characterised in that the milled cellulosic material is conveyed to a reactor 1 fed with hydrochloric acid in 42% aqueous solution; the hydrolysed mass, partially separated from the hydrochloric acid recycled to the reactor 1, is conveyed to a filtration equipment 9 for separating lignin from the sugar solution; the sugar liquid separated from the lignin is conveyed to a concentrating apparatus 10 where the content of sugars and other substances in solution is raised and the content of residual hydrochloric acid is reduced; the recovered hydrochloric acid is recycled to the reactor 1. The solution depleted in hydrochloric acid is then conveyed into storage vessels 11 where the posthydrolysis stage takes place. The glucose thus formed is afterwards conveyed to fermentation while the separated lignin can be employed as fuel. <IMAGE>
