The invention relates to an automatic safety prop intended, within the transport field, to form a retractable support leg for supporting a panel for supporting panes of glass. The prop 4 which is capable of assuming a deployed position where it bears upon the ground and a retracted position during transportation on a trailer, slides in a sheath 5 and is fitted with two sets of through holes 8 and 9 which, in interaction with bores 10 made in the sheath 5 and a pin 6, determine the retracted and deployed positions, is characterised in that it has an integral locking device which engages when the prop 4 reaches the deployed position and which prevents it from resuming a retracted position under the influence of the load alone.
