The centrifugal drum has a separating space (4) and a solids space (5), from which there extend discharge channels (6), which are provided in the lower drum part (2) and the discharge opening of which can be closed by means of sealing plugs (7) of an annular piston (8). The annular piston (8) is assigned a closing chamber (9). The closing force is formed by a closing fluid which is present in the closing chamber (9) and circulates at the angular velocity of the centrifugal drum (1) and by a control fluid which is fed into the closing chamber (9) in the direction of rotation of the centrifugal drum and increases the angular velocity of the closing fluid. The control fluid is fed to the closing chamber via nozzles (14). For initiating the opening movement of the annular piston, the feeding of the control fluid is interrupted (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
