In a gear change device for stepped gearing of motor vehicles, having an inner gear change shaft which can be displaced axially to preselect the gear slots, can rotate to engage the gears, and is guided in a bearing in a transmission housing and in a bearing in a gear change cover and is held in its initial gear slot via two helical compression springs, having a gear change finger, mounted on the gear change shaft, with an integrally formed latching cam comb which interacts with a fixed-position latching bolt/spring arrangement for locking the gear, having gear change fork shafts and gear change forks with gear change arms with engagement slots, having a locking plate, which can be moved axially by the gear change finger, is arranged on the gear change shaft and is held via a bolt/slot connection such that it cannot rotate, having blocking tabs, adjacent to the gear change finger, which block the engagement slots of the other gear change arms when the gear change finger selects an engagement slot, the inner gear change shaft (2) is borne at the bottom in a projection (3) of the transmission housing (1) and is guided at the top in a gear change cover (5) which has a cylinder space (6) for holding two helical compression springs (52 and 54) whose inner spring (52) is supported on a lower spring plate (51) and pulls the gear change shaft (2) upwards via a circlip (53), while the outer spring (54) is arranged between the gear change cover (5) and the lower spring plate (51) and presses the latter against a bearing bush (24), which closes the cylinder space (6) at the bottom and is inserted in a sheet metal plate (21) on which a sheet metal angle (25) is mounted in whose one limb (26) a gear change gate (28) guides a gear change pin (30) and in whose other limb (27) an oblong hole (31) guides a retaining sleeve (32) of a latching bolt/spring arrangement (33/34). ……
