The reliability of catching is to be increased and release facilitated. Animals traps each have two pairs of hoops (1, 1a; 2, 2a) which are mounted to be pivotable about spindles (5, 5a, 5b, 5c) with varying degrees of vertical offset and can be tensioned relative to each other by means of a tensioning spring (3), the tensioning spring (3) being able to be brought into a tensioned or untensioned state by means of a release apparatus (7, 8, 9, 10). The hoops (1, 1a; 2, 2a) are of different lengths so that when closed they overlap in pairs (Figure 1). The animal trap is used as a universal trap, that is to say as a step-through trap and as a downward-pressure trap. <IMAGE>
