A polyimide resin is obtd by reacting 1 mole of an oxime (cyclic amide) (I) with 0.01-3 mole of dianhydride to form an N-substd aliphatic imide; dissolving it in a reactive solvent esterifying agent; and adding a diamine (III). An aliphatic dianhydride (IV) (pref 0.1-3 mole) is added to the mixt before or after it is dissolved in the solvent. Pref (II) is 3,3', 4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (IIa) and/or pyromellitic dianhydride; and (IV) is 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (IVa). (I) has the formula (a) (x=1-5); caprolactam (Ia) is esp pref (III) is pref methylene dianiline (IIIa) and/or 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether, and is used in amt. such that total moles (III)=moles (II)+(IV). Suitable reactive solvents are 1-6C alcohols and esp. methaol, used at 10-20 moles/mole. (I). Suitable inert solvents include dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulphoxide, methylpyrrolidone, acetone and methyl ethyl ketone. Opt the mixt may include 0.01-2 wt.% of a surfactant. |
