The invention relates to a device for working the surface of natural stone, in particular limestone such as Jurassic marble. Hitherto such surfaces have been worked by cutting, grinding or sand blasting. Jurassic marble, in particular, is frequently found in our latitudes and in thick seams. It is therefore inexpensive and relatively easy to extract. Solnhofen marble, on the other hand, occurs only rarely and only in small seams. It is only broken and therefore exhibits a surface structure typical of its type, which makes it unmistakeable and expensive on account of its rarity. According to the invention it is possible to work natural-stone surfaces with a device in such a way that a Solnhofen surface structure results, the device being distinguished by a bundle of needle-like tools which are mounted in a housing in such a way as to be movable relative to one another to a limited extent and are directed with cutter tips provided at their bottom ends approximately perpendicularly towards the surface to be worked, and in which, furthermore, the tools are coupled to a drive with which motional impulses can be applied to the tools mainly in the axial direction, under which impulses the cutter tips can be moved between a retracted position and an advanced position and strike the surface to be worked.
