A thixotropic coating composition is described which is based on a curable aqueous binder system which may also contain fillers, pigments and conventional additives and which is made thixotropic by the addition of a thickening colloid and of a chelate complex, for example a titanium chelate. Said thickening colloid is a polysaccharide, preferably a heteropolysaccharide, which is reacted with a primary or secondary amine and/or an amino-functional silane, contains no further free hydroxyl groups and has an overall molecular weight of at least two million. Surprisingly, it has been found that, using a polysaccharide reacted in this way in combination with the chelate complex, the thixotropic state is achieved within a very short time (generally less than 1 h) and also remains essentially constant thereafter. Consequently, the composition is ready for use shortly after its preparation and can then be stored for prolonged periods without its thixotropy altering. By selecting the quantitative ratios of the reactants, the thixotropy can be adjusted from "slightly thixotropic" via "thixotropic" and "strongly thixotropic" up to the compact state (solid state).
