PURPOSE:To obtain a glass tube having high purity and excellent surface state, by rotating a raw material sol and a coagulable liquid having high specific gravity and free from mutual solubility to the sol in a vessel, coagulating the liquid and taking out the gelled material from the vessel. CONSTITUTION:A glass raw material sol 4 is charged into a vessel together with a coagulable liquid 5 (e.g. tetrachlorodifluoroethane) having higher specific gravity than the sol and mutually insoluble to the sol 4. The vessel is revolved to separate the sol 4 from the liquid 5. A major part of the sol 4 is formed in the form of a tube and an extremely small part of the sol is attached in the form of droplets to the inner wall 6 of the vessel. The sol 4 and the liquid 5 are solidified while continuing the rotation of the vessel. The coagulation of the liquid 5 may be carried out before or after the gelation of the sol 4. When the sol 4 and the liquid 5 are coagulated (7, 8), the revolution of the vessel is stopped and the gelled sol is taken out of the vessel. A support tube for optical fiber can be practically produced by this process. |
