PURPOSE:To directly and advantageously produce tartaric acid as a free acid from a reaction solution, by reacting maleic acid with hydrogen peroxide using a heterogeneous catalyst consisting of novel highly active palladium-carbon. CONSTITUTION:Maleic acid is reacted with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of heterogeneous palladium-carbon catalyst, preferably palladium-carbon catalyst obtained by suspending active carbon treated with nitric acid in an aqueous solution of tetramminepalladium (II) chloride, filtering the suspension, washing the resultant product with water and drying the product, preferably in the coexistence of an organic acid to afford the aimed tartaric acid. Since the heterogeneous catalyst is utilized, the catalyst is conveniently separated and reutilized without mixing thereof in the tartaric acid and the purifying operation is readily performed without requiring desalting operation. |
